About

How to read a fact file

Animal Profiles brings detailed animal fact files and classification profiles into one directory. Detailed fact files use a shared layout so you can compare the measurements, conservation status and range of different animals. Reference profiles show the names and classification reported by their linked source.

Conservation status

The category on each card follows the IUCN Red List, from Least Concern to Extinct. Data Deficient and Not Evaluated sit outside the scale. The Red List is revised over time, so a category can change.

Sizes and speeds

Weight, length and lifespan are typical adult ranges. A record individual can fall outside them. Top speeds are the fastest measured or widely reported figure, and a sprint is not a cruising speed.

Coverage

The site holds 2873 profiles, including 245 detailed fact files. The expanded directory covers the A–Z Animals index, including breeds, hybrids, extinct animals and broader taxonomic groups. Reference profiles link to the source and leave unverified measurements, diet and range blank. Non-animal entries from that index are grouped under Other life.
